uva-logo-new2UVa. basketball might finally be getting some respect for its magical season. Virginia (25-5, 16-1 ACC), upon clinching the regular-season ACC title with a 75-56 plastering of then-#4 Syracuse on Saturday, rose seven spots in this week’s Associated Press Top 25, to #5.

The ranking is the program’s highest since 2002. The outright ACC regular-season title is the program’s first since 1981, when Ralph Sampson was a second-year student on Grounds.

The ‘Hoos have one more regular-season game left, on Sunday at Maryland. Virginia will be the top seed in the 2014 ACC Tournament that begins March 12 in Greensboro. UVa. gets a bye through the first two rounds all the way through to Friday.

The Cavs are a season-high 10th in the ESPN and CBS Sports RPI ratings, and a season-high second in the rating system developed by basketball stats guru Ken Pomeroy, who rates Virginia’s defense third in the country and its offense a surprising 30th overall nationally.
