The Virginia women’s basketball team was defeated, 56-53, by No. 11 Miami at John Paul Jones Arena on Thursday (Jan. 19) night. Senior guard Ariana Moorer (Woodbridge, Va.) scored 18 points as Virginia’s leading scorer.
The loss dropped the Cavaliers’ record to 14-6 overall and 2-4 in Atlantic Coast Conference play. Miami improved to 16-3 overall and 5-1 in league play.
Hurricane guard Shenise Johnson scored 20 points and hit a pair of free throws with 18.2 seconds left to lift Miami to the victory.
The Cavaliers had two chances to tie on their final possession, but Moorer missed a 3-pointer with five seconds left and a desperation 3-pointer at the buzzer from Jazmin Pitts (Mosely, Va.) from the corner did not reach the basket.
Miami outrebounded Virginia 44-35. Johnson had 12 points in the second half.
Virginia led 33-29 at halftime, but the Cavaliers missed 13 of 24 free throw attempts overall.
With Chelsea Shine (Wayne, Pa.) and Ataira Franklin (Bowie, Md.) hampered with two first-half fouls, Kelsey Wolfe (Germantown, Md.), Telia McCall (Marietta, Ga.) and Pitts played significant minutes.
Wolfe finished with five points and six rebounds, while McCall added five points and three boards. Pitts contributed eight points and five rebounds.
Virginia finished 0-for-9 from behind the 3-point line and shot 34 percent from the field (21-for-62) overall.
It will be a quick turnaround for Virginia, as the Cavaliers host Boston College on Saturday (Jan. 21) at 7 p.m. That contest will be streamed by Cavaliers Live at VirginiaSports.com.
