The Cavaliers spread the ball around on Sunday and posted another shutout as No. 1 Virginia (6-0-1) closed out non-conference play with a 3-0 win over Old Dominion (1-6-0) at Klöckner Stadium.
It was the fourth shutout of the season for the Cavaliers who begin Atlantic Coast Conference play next weekend and continue a five-game home stand.
“It was a good result today, but our performance was inconsistent which mirrored our game on Friday night,” said Virginia head coach Steve Swanson. “There are areas we perform well and areas we can get better on. I’m glad the week opens up for us and we have one game so we can work on things on the training pitch. We have to get more consistent over the 90 minutes on both sides of the ball.”
Virginia got on the board in the 19th minute when the Cavaliers attacked from the far side of the box. Makenzy Doniak (Chino Hills, Calif.) received a pass at the top of the box and dribbled in before tappingthe ball through the defense to Alexis Shaffer (Cary, N.C.) on a run. Shaffer, who had slipped in behind the defense, fired the shot and put the Cavaliers on top 1-0.
The lead grew to two goals a few minutes later with heads up play and persistence from the home team. Meghan Cox (Springfield, Va.) fired a shot that hit the post and bounced back into the field of play. Kristen McNabb (Montville, N.J.) took the deflected ball and played it off the keeper and into the net for the 2-0 Cavalier lead in the 23rd minute of play.
The Cavaliers extended the lead to three goals in the 77th minute off a set piece as Emily Sonnett (Marietta, Ga.) headed one into the goal off a corner from Shaffer.
Virginia will return to the pitch on Sunday, Sept. 20, when the Cavaliers host Syracuse to open ACC play. The match is set for a 2 p.m. kick at Klöckner Stadium.
