Binghamton Mets nip Richmond Flying Squirrels, 6-5

The Richmond Flying Squirrels (54-52) struggled with runners on base in a frustrating 6-5 loss to the B-Mets on Saturday night in front of 8,007 fans at The Diamond. Manager Jose Alguacil was ejected arguing a call in the sixth inning that ultimately led to the go-ahead runs scoring for Binghamton (59-47). The Squirrels left ten men on base and lost despite out-hitting the B-Mets 14-7 in the contest. The Squirrels will look to split the four game series on Sunday afternoon at 1:35 PM with RHP Joan Gregorio on the mound.

Binghamton grasped the lead for good with a three three-run inning sixth inning. The B-Mets first tied the game, 4-4, with a disputed run as Beede walked Josh Rodriguez to open the frame. With Brock Peterson at the plate, Beede attempted to pick off Rodriquez off the first base bag. First base umpire John Bacon ruled Rodriguez safe on a close play at first and Squirrels Manager Jose Alguacil was ejected arguing the call. Rodriguez then stole second base on the next pitch and scored on a single from Vince Belnome. The B-Mets sent nine men to the plate in the sixth as Beede departed with the bases loaded for reliever Pedro Rodriguez. Gavin Checchini and pinch hitter Joe Benson pulled the Mets ahead with a run-scoring singles for a 6-4 lead. Beede (2-5) allowed six runs on five hits with four walks and seven strikeouts over five and a third innings pitched.

Hunter Cole provided a 2-0 lead for the Squirrels in the first with a home run to right against starting pitcher Gabriel Ynoa. Cole brought home Rando Moreno on the blast for his second home run with the Squirrels. Cole connected on three hits in the contest and fell a triple shy of the cycle.

The B-Mets took a 3-2 lead off Beede in the third frame. Beede walked the first two batters to create a difficult situation for himself. Cecchini singled home the B-Mets first run and TJ Rivera followed with a base hit to load the bases. A wild pitch tied the game at 2-2 and Brock Peterson pushed the B-Mets ahead with a sacrifice fly to right field for a 3-2 advantage. Beede tossed27 pitches in the inning.

Mitch Delfino put the Squirrels back on top 4-3 with a two-run single in the third. Rando Moreno and Austin Slater singled to begin the inning and advanced to second and third on a passed ball. Ynoa then struck out the next two batters before Delfino knocked a single to center for a 4-3 Squirrels lead. Ynoa (8-7) was able to last long enough to earn the win. He allowed four runs on 10 hits with three strikeouts over five innings of work. Paul Sewald ended the night with a scoreless ninth inning to earn his 17^th save of the season.

The Squirrels continue the homestand on Sunday at The Diamond against the Binghamton Mets. Richmond Joan Gregorio (1-1, 3.52) will start for the Squirrels against B-Mets RHP Matt Koch (4-4, 3.18).
