The Shenandoah Valley Art Center, during the month of April, is featuring the sculptures of Roanoke artist, Page Turner.
As a child, raised in the Mormon culture which defined gender roles, she was taught domestic skills and traditions. Turner discovered the sacredness of personal objects and how they reflected on the identity of women. She was bewitched by what was kept or saved, and by objects that were perceived to have little to no value. She is attuned to objects and tools that women have owned, such as, material remnants, and the everyday mementos that someone saves – sentimental objects, trifles, trinkets, and sundries.
The delicate sculptures of the A Stitch in Time Saves Nine series are sewn and constructed entirely by hand, using heirlooms, preserved animal parts, domestic tools, and sacred objects. Her work honors the high art of domestic skills and is a reflection of femininity. Each is a totem of a specific woman who helped to forge her identity.
Turner studied humanities at Brigham Young University for two years returning to Roanoke to serve a 14 month AmeriCorps/Vista tour. To her credit are notable exhibits across Virginia, Washington D.C., Raleigh and Charlotte, North Carolina, Kentucky, and New York City.
Her work has been presented repeatedly in publications of Studio Visit Magazine and Exponent II. Most recently, Turner was nominated by Hollins University and Roanoke College for the 2014 Perry F. Kendig Award in the individual Artist Category.
An Opening Reception will be held April 4, 6:00-8:00 p.m. and the public is encouraged to come and meet the artist.
