The teams last met in the ACC Tournament in 2012, as the Cavaliers won 1-0 in a quarterfinal match in Chapel Hill en route to winning the title.

This season marks the first year the ACC Tournament has been a four-team event. All four semifinalists are currently ranked in the top 10 of the national rankings with Florida State at No. 2, Virginia at No. 3, North Carolina at No. 5 and Notre Dame at No. 9.
