Junior quarterback Vad Lee (Durham, N.C./Hillside (Georgia Tech)) recorded more than 400 yards of total offense and produced six touchdowns to lead JMU to a 48-40 victory over host Charlotte in non-conference football Saturday afternoon at Jerry Richardson Stadium. The Dukes improved to 5-3 overall with their third straight win, while the 49ers fell for the fifth straight time to drop to 3-5.
Lee threw for a game-high 333 yards on 32-of-47 passing and ran the ball for 71 yards on 12 carries for 408 total yards. He tossed four touchdowns and rushed for two more, both career highs. It was the second time this season Lee threw for more than 300 yards and the fifth time he rushed 70 yards or more in a game.
Madison went over 200 yards rushing as a team for the sixth game this year as it gained 237 yards, including a team-best 91 yards from redshirt senior tailback Jauan Latney (Fredericksburg, Va./Massaponax). Latney also made two receptions for 55 yards to finish the day with 146 all-purpose yards, a career high. Freshman John Miller (Columbia, S.C./Spring Valley) also ran for 57 yards in the triumph.
Four wide receivers caught touchdown passes from Lee, led by redshirt senior Daniel Brown (Windsor, Va./Isle of Wight), who had four receptions for 76 yards and a score. Redshirt junior tight end Deane Cheatham (Mechanicsville, Va./Hanover) grabbed a game-high eight catches for 71 yards as a total of 12 JMU players made receptions in the game, also a season high.
Redshirt junior kicker Ryan Maglio (Midlothian, Va./Cosby) kicked a pair of field goals, including a career-long 49-yard kick, the longest since Cameron Starke‘s 49-yarder against Towson in 2012. He also made all six extra points for the Dukes. On the defensive end, redshirt senior cornerback Marquis Woodyard (Frederick, Md./Johnson) and freshman safety Marcell Johnson (Knightdale, N.C./Knightdale) tied for team-high honors in tackles with eight apiece.
