City of Staunton launches new maps, app website

AFP

staunton2editsThe City of Staunton announced today the launch of a new “Maps & Apps” website.  Maps & Apps replaces the traditional city “GIS” site previously available for use by the public.  Information can now be accessed from a collection of Maps & Apps.  New apps include: “Crime Information,” “Traffic Information” and “Election History,” in addition to “Real Estate Information.”

There are four notable features about the new Maps & Apps site.  First, the site features a faster loading map, reducing load times to view each map.  Second, information is provided in pre-configured maps (apps) (e.g., “School Information,” “Voting Information,” “Trash Pick-up Schedule”) so users can access particular information quickly.  Third, the site can be used as a high-powered information tool by those considering relocation to the area, prospective business owners and potential investors.  Finally, the site features what John Brady, Staunton’s GIS Coordinator, calls “Government Integration.”

Simply put, Government Integration means the site can serve as a one-stop shop for interaction with government.  The site pulls commonly used resources from three levels of government—local, state and federal—and makes them easily accessible in a single location.  For example, users can view current weather conditions overlaid with storm reports, statewide election results, local voter information, local, state, and federal legislative districts, details concerning taxes and utility bills, flood zone information, or U.S. Census Bureau data, all using the new website.  Additional Maps & Apps are planned for development and release.

Access to the site is via the “GIS” link at “Quick Links” on the city’s website, www.staunton.va.us.  Contact John Brady, GIS Coordinator, for training opportunities or assistance using the site.

ACC Football: Players of the Week for Week 4, with one inexcusable admission

It’s like the select media panel in charge of the ACC Football weekly honors is just messing with us, picking a guy with 14 missed passes to be the QB of the week over another guy who was 24-of-28 with four TDs.

Denver Riggleman leads (Former) Republicans for Perriello rollout

Denver Riggleman is leading a new effort called Republicans for Tom Perriello, though, not trying to be cheeky here, Riggleman is about as much a Republican today as I am. The Perriello campaign for the Fifth District congressional seat rolled out the new voter group on Monday. It wouldn’t have had less cachet, and would...
