We’re getting a better handle on the pomp and circumstance surrounding the inauguration of Abigail Spanberger, who will be sworn in as the 75th Governor of Virginia on Jan. 17.
The inaugural committee has announced a theme – “United for Virginia’s Future” – which sounds great, except that, while the actual inauguration is open to the public, you need a ticket to be there.
I could do with just getting her sworn in so we can get down to business with reversing four years of MAGA-fication, but I get it, she deserves her moment, paid for by the fatcats.
“These celebrations honor far more than any one person – they honor the story of the people of Virginia,” Spanberger said in a statement. “The upcoming inauguration will reflect the values that unite us as Virginians – a shared desire to build a stronger future for our children, the triumphs of generations of Virginians who carried us to this moment, and the rich cultures that are woven into the fabric of our Commonwealth. My family looks forward to welcoming Virginians to our capital city as we chart our path forward together.”

Made in Virginia Market
To kick off the weekend’s festivities, Virginia businesses from communities across the Commonwealth will set up at the 17th Street Market in Richmond’s Shockoe Bottom. At the market, Virginians can browse goods, services, and experiences made and offered across every corner of the Commonwealth. This event is open to the public.
Virginia vendors, merchants, and businesses that would like to express interest in reserving a booth at the market must email [email protected].
Welcome Reception
Spanberger and Virginia’s incoming First Gentleman, Adam Spanberger, will host a welcome reception at the Virginia Museum of History & Culture. Tickets are required to attend.
Saturday, Jan. 17
Interfaith Prayer Breakfast
Ahead of the Inauguration Ceremony, Spanberger and the future First Gentleman will host an interfaith prayer breakfast at historic St. Paul’s Episcopal Church to bring together Virginians across faith backgrounds. Admission to this event is by invitation only.
Inauguration Ceremony
At noon, Spanberger will be sworn in as the 75th Governor of Virginia, along with Lt. Gov.-elect Ghazala Hashmi and Attorney General-elect Jay Jones. This event is, again, technically open to the public, but due to limited seating at the ceremony, tickets are required to attend.
Additional information will be released in the coming days for Virginians who would like to express interest in receiving a ticket to the inauguration ceremony.
Inaugural Parade
The Inaugural Parade will take place immediately following the Inauguration Ceremony, with participants marching through Capitol Square. This event is open to Inauguration Ceremony attendees, which we can assume means, those who get tickets.
Inaugural Ball
The Inaugural Ball is at Main Street Station. The event will feature live performances, food, and libations from across the Commonwealth. Tickets are required to attend.
Sunday, Jan. 18
First Gentleman’s Breakfast
To introduce himself to his fellow Virginians and bring families together in community, Virginia’s first-ever First Gentleman will be hosting a pancake breakfast at the Science Museum of Virginia. Tickets are required to attend.
Executive Mansion Open House
The Governor and First Gentleman will welcome guests to the Executive Mansion for an open house. This event is open to the public; however, entry is first come, first served.
