A 25-year-old e-bike rider is dead after a fatal hit-and-run crash last night in Augusta County. The driver of the vehicle that struck the e-bike has been charged with driving while intoxicated.
The fatal crash occurred just outside Waynesboro city limits – at the intersection of U.S. 340 and Ladd Road.
Dylan C. Knowles, of Waynesboro, died at the scene.
Samuel Wayne Call, 36, is being held at Middle River Regional Jail, charged with DWI and felony hit-and-run.
According to Virginia State Police, the crash occurred Sept. 14 at approximately 9 p.m.
A Kia Sorento, driven by Call, was travelling northbound on Route 340 when it struck the e-bike (also traveling northbound). Call initially fled the scene but was later taken into custody with the assistance of the Waynesboro Police Department.
Call is also facing a Class 5 felony charge for drug possession in Staunton Circuit Court for an incident on March 7 that included a second charge for failure to yield. The felony charge is scheduled for the grand jury on Oct. 20.

Last night’s crash is under investigation. Virginia State Police is asking anyone who may have seen the e-bike travelling on Stuarts Draft Highway prior to the crash to contact dispatch at 1-800-552-0962 or email [email protected].
The Augusta County Sheriff’s Department also assisted in the investigation.
