Search over: Body of missing Norfolk sailor found, one in custody

resendiz missing norfolk naval The body of a woman sailor stationed at Naval Station Norfolk was found in a wooded area on Tuesday, according to the Naval Criminal Investigative Service, or NCIS.

Angelina Resendiz, 21, was last seen on May 29 in her barracks.

According to authorities, a sailor is in custody in connection with her death. NCIS said charges are pending under the uniform code of military justice, but it will not release further information while the investigation is ongoing, according to The Aware Foundation.

NCIS released a missing person alert through the Virginia State Police on June 3 saying her disappearance posed a credible threat to her health and safety.

She was a culinary specialist on the USS James E. Williams, according to multiple reports.

Her family issued a statement prior to the positive identification of her body saying her absence had caused them “immense grief.”

“We kindly request privacy as we navigate this incredibly difficult time,” the statement said.

A GoFundMe account was set up for the her mother, Esmeralda Castle, to help with the search for her daughter. More than $11,000 has been raised to date.
