Two Virginia Beach police officers are dead after being shot in the line of duty late Friday night.

“We are unable to share much information at this time, as this is still very much an active investigation.

“However, we want to assure the community that there is no active threat,” read a statement posted to social media.

“We ask for your patience and understanding as we work to put the pieces of this tragic event together, make notifications, and grieve the loss of two of our own.”

WTKR reported that the incident occurred at 11:30 p.m. near the intersection of Lynnhaven Parkway and Wendfield Drive.

Presumptive Democratic nominee for Governor Abigail Spanberger responded to the devastating news this morning.

“Adam and I are praying for their families, fellow officers, and all of Virginia Beach.

“We must all unite in honoring their service and their sacrifice.”

The Nelson County Sheriff’s Office also acknowledged the loss on its social media.

“We stand in solidarity with their families, fellow officers, and the entire Virginia Beach community during this time.

“We honor their service, sacrifice, and dedication to protecting others. Please keep their loved ones in your thoughts and prayers.”

The Virginia Beach Police Department will hold a news conference at 2:30 p.m. today in Building 19 at 2416 Courthouse Dr. It will also be livestreamed on the VBPD Facebook page.

Police Chief Paul Neudigate will provide an update on the incident, according to the advisory. He will be joined by Mayor Bobby Dyer and other city officials.

“Our city is grieving. Two brave police officers who dedicated their lives to protecting this community died in the line of duty,” the advisory said.
