The Shenandoah Valley Art Center, during the month of March, is exhibiting mixed media artwork by Milenko Katic. Katic was born in Serbia and grew up in Belgrade. He studied medicine for three years until he discovered his love for art. He studied drawing and painting with Professor Sergije Jovanovic’.
Dali and Magritte influenced his surrealistic style of work in the ’70s and ’80s. In 1979 he joined The Painting School of Machva with painter Milic’ de Machva and mounted group and solo exhibitions. In 1989 he moved to Charlottesville, and began selling and exhibiting his work at galleries and art shows in Virginia. Today his studio is in Afton, at the foot of the beautiful Blue Ridge Mountains.
His mixed media works on canvas or board incorporate acrylic, charcoal, conte’ crayon and drawings on paper along with found objects. An Opening Reception will be held March 1, 5-7 p.m. and the public is encouraged to come and meet the artist after he speaks briefly about his work.
In the Hallway Gallery the Waynesboro Public Schools art students will be presenting work to celebrate Youth Art Month, a national initiative to promote art and art education for kids. Exhibiting artwork in a professional gallery is an important experience for the exposure of young artists to the world of art.
The Members Gallery will present work of the “Artist’s Choice.” A selection of never-seen pieces by the artists will add a provocative perspective to the gallery experience. “Music Inspired by Art and Artists,” a free piano program performed by Ellen Schorch will present a multi-media lecture-recital. Shenandoah Valley Art Center is pleased to sponsor this unique program at the P. Buckley Moss Museum on Sunday, March 11, at 3 p.m.
The Shenandoah Valley Art Center offers, for members of the center and community, many workshops and classes taught by professional artists. Art classes offered in March are Polymer Clay: Mokume Game taught by Jessie Wood, March 14, 1–4 p.m.; Mosaics taught by Penny Taylor, March 17 and 18, 10 a.m. – 4 p.m. on Saturday and 1-4 p.m. on Sunday; Plexiglas Art taught by Piper Groves, March 23, 1-4 p.m. and SAK, Saturday Art for Kids, from 11 a.m. – 1 p.m., which offers a unique art experience for young artists.
