The Senate Judiciary Committee voted Monday to table a bill that would put a ban on assault weapons, with four Democrats joining Republicans to push the bill into 2021.

Creigh Deeds, R-Bath County, Chap Petersen, D-Fairfax, Scott Surovell, D-Fairfax, and John Edwards, D-Roanoke, voted with GOP members of the committee to table the bill.

The bill, introduced by Del. Mark Levine, D-Alexandria, had passed the House by a 51-48 vote last week.

Senate Majority Leader Dick Saslaw, D-Springfield, had already withdraw a bill that he had introduced in December in the hue and cry from gun-rights groups that have threatened everything short of a second civil war over gun-control measures supported by supermajorities of Virginians.
