The City of Staunton is planning to partially reopen the Johnson Street parking garage on Monday, Dec. 17 after a seven-month closure for renovation.
Initially, the garage will only be open to monthly customers who previously parked in the garage. Police, school and City vehicles will also be parked in the garage.
After a few weeks of resumed operation, the City will assess the garage’s capacity and see if it’s feasible to allow use by hourly and daily customers.
The garage will be open on a limited basis because of remaining work that can only be completed when outdoor temperatures are more favorable.
The City has reached an agreement with the project contractor to complete the remaining work, which includes painting, top coating and concrete work, in the spring. In the meantime, the top ramp and deck of the garage, where much of the work remains, will be closed until the project is completed in the spring.
Final work is expected to take about a month to complete; however, the project timeline could vary depending on weather conditions. The City does not plan to close the garage again while finishing touches are underway, and the project cost is not expected to change.
For Monthly Customers
After Thursday, Jan. 10, the temporary parking locations provided for garage customers during the renovation will no longer be available for use. Monthly customers will receive further instructions and information regarding resumed access to the garage from the City this week by mail or email.
