RMH to host blood drive on Jan. 5

RMH, in conjunction with Virginia Blood Services, will host a public blood drive Jan. 5 from noon to 4 p.m. Virginia Blood Services will have its blood mobile parked in Lot A near the RMH Heart & Vascular entrance. Donors may park in Lot A close to the blood mobile.

“Winter and the holiday season are crucial times of year for blood donations,” said Terry Atwater of Virginia Blood Services. “Most people are into the holidays and away from their normal routines. As a result, blood donations decrease while the demand for blood does not. You can help save lives by making a blood donation.

Virginia Blood Services supplies nearly all blood products used by patients at RMH, including those undergoing chemotherapy.

To be considered eligible to donate, you must be at least 17 years old (16 with parental consent), weigh at least 110 pounds, be in good health with no serious illnesses and have not donated blood within the last eight weeks.

Registered donors have preference. Call RMH Healthsource at (540) 564-7200 to register for a specific time. Walk-ins are welcome, and will be taken after registered donors.
