Presidential Library to feature Newsweek columnist at Spring Speaker Series

The Woodrow Wilson Presidential Library and Museum today announced that Robert Samuelson, columnist and contributing editor on politics, economics, and social issues for Newsweek and The Washington Post, will be the speaker at the 2009 Spring Speaker Series luncheon. The event will be on Friday, May 8, at 11:30 a.m. at the Stonewall Jackson Hotel and Conference Center in Staunton. Mr. Samuelson will speak on the Federal Reserve, a relevant topic given the nation’s economic challenges, and an appropriate topic for a Woodrow Wilson Presidential Library audience, given that President Wilson signed the Federal Reserve Act into law in 1913. The event is sponsored by Edward Jones Investments. Read more

Local GOP splintering over … what, exactly?

Valley Democrats are clashing over ideology. Valley Republicans are clashing over … well, it seems their very existence.
“Time to rebuild, and move forward,” commented Chris Green, the author of the Spank That Donkey political blog, in a post on his blog last night, after a contentious ACRC meeting that led to a mass exodus of local Republicans from the committee. Read more

Erik Curren | We’re in this together

Editor’s Note: The following is the op-ed in its entirety written by 20th District Democratic Party nominee Erik Curren on the unemployment stimulus vote in the House of Delegates that was excerpted as a letter to the editor in today’s News Leader. You can read it as well on the Curren campaign website here.

As Senator Mark Warner said when he was in Staunton last week, today’s economic crisis is like a hundred year flood, a storm like no other.
To borrow from Warner’s view, when a once-a-century flood overtakes the banks of a river, threatening to destroy people, towns and livelihoods, the community bands together ahead of the waters with stacks of sandbags ready to beat back the tide and save their homes. The hard work and sacrifices are worth it, the people think, because to do nothing would be far worse, destroying hope and sweeping the town away. Read more

‘Liberal media’ sides with GOP … again

The local “liberal media” at the News Leader is at it again, this time giving column space to local Republican legislators Chris Saxman, Ben Cline and Steve Landes to defend themselves from the controversy over their nonsensical party-line vote blocking the receipt of federal stimulus money to expand unemployment benefits for the tens of thousands of Virginians thrown out of work by the economic calamity we’re in now. Tom Perriello | Fifth District Report

Last Thursday marked my 100th day as your U.S. Congressman, and I’d like to report back on some of the successes of this first 100 days and what more remains to be done. While the extraordinary times we face have demanded some extraordinary measures, like the recovery bill, I believe we have laid a strong foundation for economic recovery and fought successfully for the priorities for Virginia’s working families.  Read more

Paul Prouty | Earth Day reminder – We all share one planet

Earth Day is April 22, just around the corner, bringing with it a stark reminder of the importance of protecting our environment and natural resources.
The first Earth Day was celebrated in 1970. Nearly four decades later, and despite the difficulties in our economy, protecting our environment is still center stage. In fact, protecting the environment holds one of the keys to the nation’s economic recovery. Read more

Steven Chu and Hilda Solis | Building the American Clean Energy Economy

On April 22, people across the country and around the world will celebrate Earth Day, a day dedicated to raising awareness about the plight of our natural resources and taking real action to make a difference. For decades, while Americans in towns and cities across the country have worked to make a difference in their communities, politicians in both parties in Washington have ignored the energy crisis, imperiling our economy, our security and our planet. Now, we have a unique and critical opportunity to attack the energy crisis head on and create a comprehensive energy policy that will bolster our economy, end our dependence on foreign oil and reduce the threat of deadly pollution that is devastating our planet.  Read more

Can pushing green change blue back to red?

“I think, and some of you all might disagree with me, I think nuclear power has to be one of the options. I don’t think we can take coal off the table. In fact, we’re building a new coal plant down in Southwest Virginia, but we ought to make that the place that gets carbon-capture and sequestration so we can use coal more efficiently. I’d love to have that here in Virginia.”
Uh, oh. Sounds like somebody is pandering to the right here.
He’d better watch out. The thought police on the green left is going to skewer this fascist.
Really. Nuclear, coal. What’s next – he’s going to tell us he’s for offshore drilling? Read more
