The Virginia Education Association today announced its support for the “Educator Fairness Act,” a key component of Gov. Bob McDonnell’s K-12 education reform agenda for the 2013 General Assembly session.

With memories of long poll lines still fresh in the minds of many Virginia voters, House Republicans blocked an attempt to make voting more accessible by opposing legislation to extend polling hours from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m. in the Campaign Finance subcommittee Wednesday evening.

Gov. Bob McDonnell announced today a way for Virginians to become “mobile ready” for disasters. The Ready Virginia mobile app, developed by the Virginia Department of Emergency Management, gives Virginians a new way to prepare for disasters and also to stay informed during emergencies with the latest information.

With winter weather forecasted for much of Virginia, AAA is urging motorists to be prepared so they don’t get stranded. AAA recommends motorists stay home and off the roads in treacherous conditions, but if you do have to drive – prepare ahead of time.

The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner today unveiled models and photographs showing the approximate facial appearance of four individuals found deceased in western Virginia in separate locations between 1986 and 2012, but whose identities are unknown. Currently, the medical examiner’s office has 220 sets of remains for unidentified individuals who died in Virginia. Some remains date back to the 1970s.

Dixie Gas & Oil Corporation announced this week that it is supporting the Augusta County 4-H & FFA Market Animal Show and Sale through BP’s Fueling Communities Program with a grant donation of $1,500.

A contract valued at $2.4 million was awarded to Fairfield-Echols LLC of Fishersville for the construction of the East Nelson Street (Route 60) bridge in the City of Lexington. The contract was awarded by Virginia Department of Transportation Commissioner Greg Whirley on Jan. 8.
