U.S. Sens. Mark Warner and Tim Kaine today applauded the confirmation of Marilyn Tavenner of Virginia as the Administrator of the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) by a vote of 91 to 7. Tavenner is the first Senate-confirmed CMS Administrator since 2006. CMS oversees Medicare and Medicaid and is charged with health care services for millions of Americans.

The Commonwealth Transportation Board today voted to award Serco Inc. the Transportation Operations Center and Statewide Advanced Traffic Management Systems contract to operate the state’s five transportation operations centers and manage the Safety Service Patrol. The six-year contract is worth $355 million.

Former Virginia infielder David Adams has been called up for the first time by the New York Yankees and will be in uniform Wednesday evening. Adams played for the Cavaliers from 2006-08.

Virginia Gov. Bob McDonnell has a 49-28 percent job approval rating, down slightly from his 53-26 percent score March 27 and his lowest score in two years, according to a Quinnipiac University poll released today.

The WWRC Foundation will host a free exhibit of classic and antique cars from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, May 18, on the grounds at the Woodrow Wilson Rehabilitation Center. The show will feature vehicles with assistive technology for drivers with disabilities as well as more than 35 vintage cars from five local clubs, including Corvair, Corvette, Model A, Mustang, and the Waynesboro-Staunton Chapter of the Antique Automobile Club of America.

There is a memorial to soldiers overseas that says “when you go home, tell them of us and say, for your tomorrow, we gave our today.” That is what Memorial Day is all about. Each year we see World War II, Korea and Vietnam veterans gather on Memorial Day to honor their comrades who paid the ultimate sacrifice.

The No. 7 Virginia baseball team rolled to a 17-3 victory over VCU Tuesday evening in front of 3,162 fans at Davenport Field. Virginia (43-8) finished its 2013 home schedule with a 32-3 record as it scored in double figures for the third straight game.

One of the hallmarks of the Earl Hamner Jr. Theatre is its systematic development of new scripts. Although the theatre space in Nellysford was closed last fall, the Hamner has continued its Virginia Playwrights and Screenwriters Initiative (VPSI) under the direction of its Artistic Director Boomie Pedersen and joined with WTA’s Gateway to present a new series of developing scripts.

U.S. Sen. Tim Kaine, a member of the Senate Budget Committee, took to the Senate floor again today to call for an end to Republican obstruction on the budget. In his remarks, Kaine noted the proposed budget would replace the sequester cuts in the next fiscal year which have caused 800,000 furloughs of Department of Defense civilian employees this year, including 90,000 in Virginia.

Twenty-five years ago tragedy struck the Harrisonburg community with the death of Shirley Collins. In the aftermath of that act of sexual violence, a dynamic group of people came together to create CASA-Citizens Against Sexual Assault, which is now called the Collins Center. This growing non-profit, located in downtown Harrisonburg, models and promotes the prevention of child sexual abuse, and provides excellence in sexual assault response and treatment in Harrisonburg and Rockingham County.
