The Virginia Sports Information Directors (VaSID) presented the organization’s Distinguished Service Award to two statewide legends in the field of athletic communications. Rich Murray of the University of Virginia and Dave Smith of Virginia Tech received the honor at VaSID’s annual meeting on June 6 at Randolph-Macon College in Ashland.

The Lynchburg Hillcats were swept for the third time this season today as they fell 10-6 to the Potomac Nationals. Jayson Werth, in his final rehab game with Potomac went deep twice and drove in six runs.

The Lynchburg Hillcats suffered their first blown save of the season tonight, and lost for the first time when leading after seven innings. The Potomac Nationals walked off in the bottom of the ninth with a 5-4 win courtesy of an RBI-double for Caleb Ramsey. The loss dropped the Hillcats (29-24) into second place, while the Nationals (30-24) jumped into first.

The Salem Red Sox threatened constantly but rarely capitalized on Saturday night. Despite 12 hits and seven walks, with multiple baserunners in eight different innings, the Sox mustered three measly runs and stranded a dozen runners in their 5-3 loss to Myrtle Beach.

Virginia Military Institute will join the Southern Conference as a full member beginning with the 2014-15 academic year. VMI Superintendent General J.H. Binford Peay III made the announcement Friday afternoon after the Board of Visitors voted to accept an invitation for membership from the league.
