UVa.-Notre Dame football date announced for 2015 season

Chris Graham

The Atlantic Coast Conference announced today the dates the Notre Dame football team will face ACC opponents for the 2014, 2015 and 2016 seasons. The Fighting Irish will play the Cavaliers at Scott Stadium on Saturday, Sept. 12, 2015 in the only meeting between the teams during that span.

uva-logo-new2“The home game against Notre Dame gives us another high-profile opponent at Scott Stadium that will be very attractive for our fans and allow us to showcase our program to a national audience,” said Virginia head coach Mike London. “Playing opponents of this caliber is something that excites our players and allows us to attract prospective student-athletes who want to compete against the top teams in the nation.”

This will mark the first game between Notre Dame and Virginia in Charlottesville. Virginia has faced Notre Dame only once before at the 1989 Kickoff Classic at the Meadowlands in East Rutherford, N.J. The No. 2 Irish defeated the Cavaliers, 36-13.

In April, the ACC announced an arrangement with Notre Dame to face ACC teams each year in football as part of its agreement to join the league. The Fighting Irish will play five ACC teams each year, alternating between three home games and two away and two home games and three away each year. Notre Dame will face every ACC team at least once in the first three-year rotation of games.

Virginia’s 2015 non-conference schedule also includes home games with Boise State (Sept. 26) and William & Mary (TBA) and a road game at UCLA (Sept. 5).

“Having a good slate of non-conference opponents is important in building a program,” said Virginia athletics director Craig Littlepage. “With where we want our program to be, it is good to play a quality schedule that includes nationalprograms like Notre Dame, UCLA and Boise State. The schedule also provides quality regional opponents like William & Mary with whom we have a great history.”
