It’s that time again. Virginia General Assembly time. Remember that little election way back in November 2011, the one when all 140 seats of the General Assembly were up for grabs? Now it is time for the winners to take their annual winter trek down the James. As for those the voters have excused from such chilly trips to Richmond, they are free to go elsewhere this winter, preferably to a more hospitable spot where “the weather better suits their souls.”

The Virginia Outdoors Foundation permanently protected 26,375 acres of open space through 127 conservation easements in 2012—a rate of more than three acres every hour.

To move forward to North Dakota State’s back-to-back FCS national championships, you have to move backward with coach Craig Bohl. Bohl was an assistant coach during Nebraska’s big run in the mid-1990s, including two of the Cornhuskers’ national championship seasons. Bohl’s NDSU squad, having beaten Sam Houston State for the second straight season in the FCS title game this past Saturday, was a unanimous selection on Monday on all 142 ballots of The Sports Network FCS Top 25.

Like most Republicans, Thomas Hobbes did not believe in Republicanism. He was an absolutist; one guy in charge. (Although it has been argued that a single body like Cromwell’s Parliament qualified in an absolutist way as ‘one guy’.) What can’t be argued is Hobbes clearly thinks it is from here the Social Contract is formed–the rules by which we live together.

As you may know, on New Year’s Day, the House of Representatives received a proposal from the United States Senate regarding the actions it wished to take to address the fiscal cliff. While I was pleased that the Senate finally offered a proposal of its own to address this crisis, I was disappointed that our colleagues in the Senate waited until the last minute and sent us a proposal that does not address our spending problem.

VMi wins at Presbyterian, 86-77

Stan Okoye had a career-high 39 points, including 26 in the second half, to lead the Keydets to an 86-77 win over the Presbyterian College Blue Hose Saturday night in Clinton, S.C. The contest was the Big South opener for both programs.

AAA: Gas prices trend higher to begin new year

Prices at the pump began 2013 with a national average of $3.29 per gallon, the highest ever to begin a year. By Friday, the national average price for a gallon of regular unleaded gasoline was $3.30. While this price is 8 cents less than one month ago, it is 2 cents more expensive than one week ago and a penny more than one year ago.

Virginia head football coach Mike London announced today the hiring of four assistant coaches to fill the vacancies on the Cavalier staff. Joining the Virginia football program are former NC State and Boston College head coach Tom O’Brien, 32-year college coaching veteran Jon Tenuta and 12-year college special teams coach Jeff Banks. Former UVa quarterback Marques Hagans has been promoted to a full-time position after serving as a graduate assistant coach at Virginia the past two seasons.
