The following is a list of highway work that might affect traffic in the Staunton VDOT transportation district during the coming weeks. The Staunton district is comprised of 11 counties, Alleghany, Bath, Rockbridge, Augusta, Highland, Rockingham, Shenandoah, Frederick, Page, Warren and Clarke. Work scheduled is subject to change due to inclement weather and material supplies. Motorists are advised to watch for slow-moving tractors during mowing operations. Also, when traveling through a work zone, be alert to periodic changes in traffic patterns and lane closures.

Route 363 – Project at Blue Ridge Community College will widen north and south entrances lanes and include right and left turn lanes out of the college onto Route 11. Estimated completion Aug. 16, 2013.

Route 626 (Sandy Bottom Road) (NEW) – Road closed 1.2 miles east of Route 628 (Beldor Road) and 0.08 miles from dead end of Route 626 (Sandy Bottom Road) for bridge replacement over Tributary to Hawksbill Creek. August 12 and 13, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m, all work weather permitting. Emergency routes and procedures will be in place during the closure.
Route 672 (Pineville Road) – Road closed to through traffic from McGaheysville Road to Lawyer Road (1.275 miles) for road demolition and reconstruction. One lane will remain open for property owners and residents only. No through traffic. Expect delays. Work this week will run Monday through Saturday, 6 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Estimated completion September 2013.
Route 726 (Stone Spring Road) (NEW) – One day road closure on August 7. Follow detour signs from Peach Grove Avenue to Port Republic Road (Route 253).
Route 726 (Stone Spring Road and Peach Grove Avenue) – New road construction to extend Southeast Connector. Possible shoulder closures controlled by signs, from 0.512 miles east of Harrisonburg city limits to 0.149 miles west of city limits. Monday to Friday, 7 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Estimated completion November 2014.
Route 727 (Airport Road) – Bridge work from Route 11 (Lee Highway) to Route 696 (Kisers Road). Road closed until further notice. Estimated completion Dec. 6, 2013.
Route 730 (Community Center Road) – Alternate lane closures from Route 731 (Community Center Road) to Route 257 – Paving operations. Flagger controlled traffic. Estimated completion July 31, 2013.

Traffic has been routed onto new section of roadway, 0.1 mile south of Route 663 (Island Ford Road) to 0.16 mile south of Route 662 (Compton Hollow Road). Expect daily lane closures and 24-hour shoulder closures. Estimated completion for bridge work is fall 2013.

Intersection of Route 686 (Smeltzer’s Road) and Route 340, from 0.24 miles south of the intersection of Route 662 (Compton Hollow Road) at Route 340, is permanently closed. A cul-de-sac will be constructed at the west end of Route 686. Motorists wishing to access Route 686 will need to turn off of Route 340 onto Route 662 and travel 0.26 miles east on Route 662 to Route 686. Signs will be posted.

Route 600 (Zepp Road) in Cedar Creek over Shell Run – Box culvert replacement. Width restriction is 10 feet and speed is reduced to 23 mph. Traffic controlled by flaggers during the day and stop and proceed at night. Estimated completion August 31, 2013.
Route 623 (Back Road) (NEW) – Road closed in Mt. Olive area for pipe replacement, August 6 and August 7, weather permitting. Southbound traffic will detour via Route 601 east to Route 11 south to Route 651 west to Route 623. Northbound traffic will detour via Route 651 east to Route 11 north to Route 601 west to Route 623.
Route 629 – Paving from Route 11 (Old Valley Pike) to Main Street. Monday to Friday, 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Estimated completion November 2013.
Route 681 (Alonzaville Road) (NEW) – Road closed in the Fairview area for pipe replacement, August 8 and August 9, weather permitting. Southbound traffic will detour via Route 604 east to Route 623 south to Route 676 west to Route 681. Northbound traffic will detour via Route 676 east to Route 623 north to Route 604 west to Route 681.
