The following is a list of highway work that might affect traffic in the Staunton VDOT transportation district during the coming weeks. The Staunton district is comprised of 11 counties, Alleghany, Bath, Rockbridge, Augusta, Highland, Rockingham, Shenandoah, Frederick, Page, Warren and Clarke.

Claudia Emerson, distinguished professor, poet and Pulitzer Prize winner, will join the Virginia Commonwealth University Department of English in the College of Humanities and Sciences beginning Aug. 15.

The Virginia Sports Information Directors (VaSID) presented the organization’s Distinguished Service Award to two statewide legends in the field of athletic communications. Rich Murray of the University of Virginia and Dave Smith of Virginia Tech received the honor at VaSID’s annual meeting on June 6 at Randolph-Macon College in Ashland.

Before moving to Staunton last summer, Robert E. Lee High School social studies teacher Jennifer Goss had the privilege of documenting the story of Holocaust survivor, Frank Grunwald. The resulting film, Misa’s Fugue, has since garnered several awards and been selected to play in several prestigious film festivals throughout the world.

Stuart Hall School will begin its Alumnae/i Weekend with a special wreath laying memorial service to honor former students and faculty who have died. Of special mention will be Renee Smith Gatling, Class of 1973, the first African American student to graduate from the School, and Lance Cpl. Jason C. Redifer, Class of 2003, one of the first males to attend the Upper School at Stuart Hall.

As what usually happens with a coaching change, EMU’s first-year skipper, Ben Spotts, is starting at the ground floor. Spotts is taking a Royals program which hasn’t had a winning season since 2002, using the good pieces already in place, and implementing his style.

The Augusta County Historical Society will continue its popular Stuart Series Talks with a special presentation on the Emancipation Proclamation by Dr. Holt Merchant, a professor of history at Washington & Lee University, on Thursday at 7 p.m.

Virginia head football coach Mike London announced today the hiring of four assistant coaches to fill the vacancies on the Cavalier staff. Joining the Virginia football program are former NC State and Boston College head coach Tom O’Brien, 32-year college coaching veteran Jon Tenuta and 12-year college special teams coach Jeff Banks. Former UVa quarterback Marques Hagans has been promoted to a full-time position after serving as a graduate assistant coach at Virginia the past two seasons.
