The VMI Keydets announced their 2016 baseball schedule Thursday, a 55-game slate that will open with four games in Winston-Salem, N.C. the weekend of Feb. 19. The slate features 2015 regional qualifiers in Radford, Mercer, VCU and defending national champion Virginia, as well as in-state opponents Old Dominion, Longwood, Richmond, Virginia Tech and James Madison.

Governor Terry McAuliffe announced that nominations are now being accepted for the 2016 Governor’s Volunteerism and Community Service Awards. The nomination period ends at 5:00 p.m. on Dec. 16.

Republican challenger Tim Martin upset long-time incumbent Augusta County Commonwealth attorney Lee Ervin in Tuesday’s general election. Martin, a deputy Commonwealth’s attorney in Staunton, received 62.6 percent of the vote in the two-way race. Ervin, who served as Commonwealth’s attorney in Augusta County for 33 years, lost by 4,376 votes.

Today, U.S. Senators Mark Warner and Tim Kaine praised President Barack Obama’s announcement that federal employers will be required to “ban the box” on job applications, removing a barrier for former offenders seeking employment after incarceration.

At 1:04 a.m., Virginia State Police Trooper W.C. Fugate responded to a single-vehicle crash in Nelson County. The crash occurred Oct. 31 on Route 29 near River Road.

During a visit to Perrymont Elementary School in Lynchburg last week, First Lady of Virginia Dorothy McAuliffe announced a 139% increase in the number of schools participating in the Community Eligibility Provision (CEP), a new provision from the federal Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act that allows schools with high poverty rates to provide free breakfast and lunch to all students.
