VMI baseball announces 2016 schedule

The VMI Keydets announced their 2016 baseball schedule Thursday, a 55-game slate that will open with four games in Winston-Salem, N.C. the weekend of Feb. 19. The slate features 2015 regional qualifiers in Radford, Mercer, VCU and defending national champion Virginia, as well as in-state opponents Old Dominion, Longwood, Richmond, Virginia Tech and James Madison.

Tim Martin unseats Lee Ervin in Augusta County Commonwealth attorney race

Republican challenger Tim Martin upset long-time incumbent Augusta County Commonwealth attorney Lee Ervin in Tuesday’s general election. Martin, a deputy Commonwealth’s attorney in Staunton, received 62.6 percent of the vote in the two-way race. Ervin, who served as Commonwealth’s attorney in Augusta County for 33 years, lost by 4,376 votes.

First Lady Dorothy McAuliffe announces 139% school participation increase in key child hunger program

During a visit to Perrymont Elementary School in Lynchburg last week, First Lady of Virginia Dorothy McAuliffe announced a 139% increase in the number of schools participating in the Community Eligibility Provision (CEP), a new provision from the federal Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act that allows schools with high poverty rates to provide free breakfast and lunch to all students.
