UVa. soccer’s Jordan Allen signs MLS Homegrown Contract with Real Salt Lake

UVa. freshman midfielder Jordan Allen (Rochester, N.Y.) moved into the professional ranks Tuesday (Dec. 31) when he signed a Homegrown contract with Real Salt Lake of Major League Soccer. Allen was one of three Cavaliers to start all 24 games this season and tied for the team lead with five assists. He recorded three goals and 11 points in 2013.

Virginia women’s basketball downs Florida Gulf Coast, 85-56

The Virginia women’s basketball team (5-6) defeated Florida Gulf Coast (6-5), 85-56 in the finale of the FGCU Hilton Garden Inn/Homewood Suites Classic in Fort Myers, Fla. Virginia made nine consecutive three-point attempts in the first half, finishing the period shooting 90.0 percent (9 of 10) from long range. Six different Cavaliers made at least one three-pointer in the game with senior guard Kelsey Wolfe (Germantown, Md.) connecting on 4-of-7.

Staunton Senior Center Abounds with Holiday Atmosphere

Staunton Senior Center was all about creating holiday crafts this week as well sprinkling in some Christmas music and cheer for good measure! Monday found members gathered around a table designing lovely punch out cardinals suitable to decorate a tree or just hang from a special spot. Tuesday found the group journeying to the Jollivue UMC Senior Luncheon to join in the festivities there.

East Carolina rides second-half run to 103-94 win over VMI

The East Carolina Pirates used a 19-4 run early in the second half to pull away and held off a rally attempt by the VMI Keydets to prevail, 103-94, in non-conference basketball action Thursday in Greenville, N.C. The contest saw 11 total players score in double figures, with ECU (10-2) putting six players in double figures and VMI (6-5) posting five-such scorers.
