Can you keep a secret? This is an important one. I’m opting out of Black Friday this year. Truth be told, we’re opting out of the craziness of Christmas across the board. Which wasn’t a popular decision with all the family. “Whatever,” my mom said when we broke the news to her. (These kinds of things only work mutually, you see.)

I was reading on Gawker this evening about a waitress in Manhattan who quit her job after being told by the manager that she’d have to pick up the tab for three diners who ran up a $96 tab and then left the restaurant without paying.

Last month, the Bridgewater College men’s and women’s golf teams partnered with Special Olympics for a golf outing at Lakeview Golf Course. That partnership was selected by the NCAA to be one of the featured stories in November’s Special Olympics Spotlight at NCAA.org.

VDOT will open Route 727 (Airport Road) in Rockingham County on Friday. Contractors from Fairfield-Echols LLC of Fishersville have substantially completed the project just west of Route 11 at Mount Crawford. The work included construction of a new bridge over the North River and realigning part of the road to eliminate two sharp curves.

Mathers Construction is in the spirit of giving and has joined the Valley Businesses Give Back effort to raise money and gather donated food for the Blue Ridge Area Food Bank. In 2012, the collaborative collected 23,465 pounds of food and more than $4,000 for the Food Bank.

Following an extensive national search, Bridgewater College has selected Dr. Maureen Silva to join the College as vice president for institutional advancement. Silva, who comes to Bridgewater with a broad background in higher education development and fundraising, will begin on Feb. 1, 2014.
