Women’s basketball: Virginia plays at Wake Forest on Sunday

Chris Graham

virginia basketballThe Virginia women’s basketball team (11-5, 1-1 ACC) plays just its second road game since Nov. 29 when it travels to Wake Forest (9-6, 0-2 ACC) for an Atlantic Coast Conference game on Sunday, Jan. 10 at 2 p.m. at Joel Coliseum in Winston-Salem, N.C.

All of the 2015-16 Virginia women’s basketball games – home and away – are available locally on NewsRadio 1070 AM and 98.9 FM WINA and streaming online at wina.com and VirginiaSports.com with Channing Poole calling the action.

Notre Dame snapped the Cavaliers’ six-game home-win streak when UND downed UVA 74-46 on Thursday night. Virginia had scored at least 70 points in each of the five games prior but tallied a season-low 46 against the Irish.

Sophomore guard Mikayla Venson (Arlington, Va.) scored 17 points against the Irish, her ninth-straight game scoring in double digits. Venson was 4-of-8 from three-point range while the rest of the team combined to go 1-of-7 from beyond the arc.

Venson also matched her season-high in rebounding with a team-high five boards. It was the first time in Venson’s career that she led the team in rebounding in a game.

Venson is averaging 15.0 points per game, tied for seventh in the ACC in scoring with fellow sophomore Jamie Cherry of North Carolina. Of the top 10 scorers in the ACC, five of them are sophomores. For the Cavaliers, three of their top four scorers are second-years including Lauren Moses (Mount Holly, N.J) at 10.9 points per game and Aliyah Huland El (Randolph, N.J.) at 10.4.

The Cavaliers forced 19 Notre Dame turnovers, one shy of the season-high 20 times the Irish turned the ball over against UConn.  It was the 15th time in this season’s 16 games that the Cavaliers had fewer turnovers than their opponent. Virginia is third in the ACC in turnover margin (+5.3).

Virginia is 65-5 all-time against the Demon Deacons and has won four the last five meetings. Last season, the Cavaliers edged the Deacons 72-70 at JPJ. Virginia’s last loss at Wake was a 64-57 defeat in 2010.

Virginia will be back in action at John Paul Jones Arena next Thursday, Jan. 14, hosting Louisville at 7 p.m.

Single-game ticket prices for all home games are $10 for Reserved seating, $8 for adult General Admission and $6 for youth (18 & under), senior (60 & over) and UVA faculty/staff General Admission. Fans may purchase home game tickets through the Virginia Athletics Ticket Office online at VirginiaSports.com, by phone and in person.
