
The National Weather Service has put out a flurry of advisories and warnings due to the bitter cold and potential for snow throughout Virginia, West Virginia and Maryland.
The NWS is also warning of the possibility of slippery roads, ruptured water pipes, frostbite and hypothermia.
The Cold Weather Advisory for Augusta and Rockingham counties has been extended through 10 a.m. on Thursday.
Wind chills of five to 10 degrees below zero are expected, according to the NWS.
The weather advisory includes the cities of Staunton, Waynesboro, Stuarts Draft and Harrisonburg.
Snow flurries are also possible.
The advisory is in effect from midnight tonight to 11 a.m. Wednesday and from 9 p.m. Wednesday to 10 a.m. Thursday.
The NWS warns that hypothermia is possible if precautions are not taken. If you must be outside, dress in layers and wear a hat and gloves.
Cold weather advisories have been issued for much of Virginia through Wednesday morning.
Extreme Cold Warning issued for Virginia, West Virginia and Maryland
An Extreme Cold Warning remains in effect until 7 a.m. on Thursday in parts of Maryland, Virginia and West Virginia.
Dangerously cold wind chills as low as 20 to 30 degrees below zero are expected.
In Virginia, the cold warning was issued for western and eastern Highland counties, Northern Virginia Blue Ridge and Central Virginia Blue Ridge. The warning is also for Garrett and extreme western Allegany counties. In West Virginia, the warning is for western Grant, western Mineral, western Pendleton and eastern Pendleton counties.
The dangerously cold wind chills could cause frostbite on exposed skin in as little as 30 minutes. The coldest wind chills are expected tonight between midnight and 9 a.m. on Wednesday.
An extended period of freezing temperatures could rupture water pipes.
Winter Weather Advisory issued for Hampton Roads
A Winter Weather Advisory is in effect from 5 p.m. today through 7 a.m. Wednesday.
One to two inches of snow is expected in Northampton, Southampton, Isle of Wight, Newport News, Hampton and Poquoson as well as northeast North Carolina.
Hazardous Weather Outlook issued for NOVA
A Hazardous Weather Outlook has been issued for northern Virginia, the District of Columbia and for the Maryland portion of the Chesapeake Bay, Tidal Potomac River and the Interstate 95 corridor through central Maryland.
A Freezing Spray Advisory is in effect for the wider waters beginning late tonight. Cold Weather advisories remain in effect for tonight.
A couple of snow showers are possible later this evening resulting in a light coating of snow in some areas. The snow could result in slippery travel.
