The newly formed Virginia Independent School Football League kicks off the first ever full season of eight-man football in Virginia on Friday, Aug. 31 with St. Anne’s-Belfield School playing a home game against cross-town team Covenant School at 7:00 p.m.
Additionally, Hampton Roads Academy will take on Greenbrier Christian Academy in Chesapeake, and Kenston Forest School will play Brunswick Academy in Lawrenceville. Virginia Episcopal School will open their season on Friday, Sept. 7 at Hampton Roads Academy.
“Being a part of Virginia football history is incredibly exciting,” said St. Anne’s-Belfield School Athletic Director Dewayne Robinson. “It’s been a fast-paced year since trialing a few ‘eight man’ games last season, and we’re thrilled to now have a fully sanctioned league to play in as we continue to encourage participation in the sport, build on our program’s past successes, and continue to provide positive experiences in a sport that has been a part of the School’s community for decades.”
The VISFL is the state’s first sanctioned “eight man” league and will include a full playoff, all league selections, and a potential senior bowl showcase.
All seven participating schools have made a two-year commitment to the league, and up to five additional schools have shown interest in joining next year.
