Odd timing for news about staff changes with Virginia Tech Basketball, where coach Mike Young announced on Friday that two of his assistants, including his recruiting coordinator, will not be returning.

Blake Wetherington is the recruiting coordinator who is headed out the door, after nine months on the job.

Wetherington had found his way to Tech after a two-year stint at Arkansas and four years at Iowa State.

The other guy leaving is Christian Webster, who had been with Young since Young’s first season in Blacksburg, in 2019-2020.

Webster had been a holdover from the Buzz Williams years – he was on Williams’ staff from 2016-2019.

The odd timing that I’m noting here is – the transfer portal opens on Monday.

Young indicated to the media after last week’s season-ending loss to Cal in the ACC Tournament that he wanted to “address some things in the offseason,” but that seemed to be specific to the roster.

Now he’s got to recruit new players and two new coaches.

Here was a quote from Young in a press release from the school announcing the staff changes:

“As we move forward, we are evaluating every aspect of our program to position Virginia Tech men’s basketball for long-term success,” Young said. “These changes reflect our commitment to that vision and present new opportunities for us to evolve with the current landscape of college athletics.”

An already tough job is getting that much tougher for Mike Young here.
