policeAt the request of the Buckingham County Sheriff’s office, the Virginia State Police is investigating a fatal officer-involved shooting that occurred Saturday in Buckingham County.

At 12:55 p.m. Saturday (Feb. 13), Virginia State Police responded to the Faulknier County Store in the 13,300 block of S. Constitution Street in Scottsville for a report of a black male yelling and attacking two people inside the store. Moments before the trooper arrived, the male, later identified as Dyzhawn L. Perkins, 19, of Buckingham, Va., fled the store and broke into a nearby residence where he assaulted an elderly couple.

Shortly after 1 p.m. Saturday, the Buckingham County Sheriff’s Office was called to a residence in the 800 block of Penlan Road in the community of Arvonia for a combative male subject. When two deputies arrived, Perkins jumped through a plate glass window and attacked one of the approaching deputies. The deputy was knocked to the ground. Perkins, now on top of the deputy, continued to fight the deputy. The deputies ultimately fired at Perkins.

Perkins died at the scene. His remains were transported to the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner in Richmond.

The deputy was transported to UVA Medical Center for treatment of minor injuries.

The Virginia State Police Bureau of Criminal Investigation’s Appomattox Field Office responded to the scene to investigate the shooting.
