va farm bureauVirginia apples are in season, and according to growers this year’s crop is top-notch. Apples were brought to North America by European colonists. With more than 7,500 varieties, they are one of the most widely cultivated tree fruits.

John Marker grows apples on more than 250 acres in Frederick County near Winchester. “This year’s apples are very good,” he said. “They have a good flavor, good size and a good color.”

James Douglas, who also grows apples in Frederick, was pleased as well. “The apples are clean; they don’t have a lot of blemishes. It’s an excellent season,” he said.

The exceptionally rainy growing season was great for apples, Douglas added. Virginia apples are used in a variety of products. “Our apples are used in processing, which includes sauce, slices, pies and juice. But we also have a market on the farm” that’s open to the public, Marker said. Marker Miller Orchards also allows customers to pick their own apples

“We grow 15 acres for pick-your-own,” Marker said.

Apples are also a low-calorie, healthy snack option. They are full of fiber and vitamin C and can help regulate blood sugar, reduce the chance of developing diabetes and reduce the risk of developing certain cancers.
