vcu-logoVirginia Commonwealth University’s Office of Continuing and Professional Education will offer a series of weekend workshops focused on play therapy, a form of counseling or psychotherapy in which licensed professionals use play to help people, especially children, better process their experiences and develop more effective communication strategies.

The weekend workshops are designed for mental health professionals and will meet the 150 hours required for counselors, marriage and family therapists, psychiatric nurses, psychologists, clinical social workers and other professionals who are seeking a Registered Play Therapist credential.

The workshops will begin Feb. 20 and will continue through early December. Sessions will be held on Fridays from 4 p.m. to 9 p.m. and on Saturdays and Sundays from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Career and Technical Center at 13900 Hull St. in Midlothian. Free on-site parking is available. The cost to register is $350 per workshop and workshops are designed to be taken in any order.

Last month, the Office of Continuing and Professional Education was declared an approved provider of play therapy continuing education by the Association of Play Therapy, a national professional society of mental health professionals in 1982.

Visit http://ocpe.vcu.edu/ for more information about the play therapy program, or to register for a workshop. Click on the course directory tab and enter “play” as the search term.
