The #1 seed Virginia women lost a PK shootout to Washington to end their season Sunday afternoon, then later in the day, the #2 seed Virginia men lost to UNC Greensboro, also in a PK shootout.

A sucky day at Klöckner Stadium, to say the least.

The women (14-3-5) trailed Washington (15-2-7) after a 13th minute goal from Kalea Eichenberger, but got the equalizer in the 54th minute, with Laney Rouse, Ella Carter and Addison Halpern combining for the score.

Rouse got to the end line and cut in on the attack, but turned back and sent a ball over the top to Carter at the top of the box for a redirect in to Halpern to the left of the spot.

Halpern then fired the shot, slotting it in past the left post for the score.

The score remained 1-1 through the end of regulation and the two OT periods.

In the shootout, UW keeper Tanner Ijams saved the first kick, from UVA’s Maggie Cagle, to give the Huskies the early edge.

On the fifth round of kicks, Addison Halpern converted to tie the score at 4-4.

Washington’s Lucy Newlin got the final kick past UVA keeper Victoria Safradin to clinch the game.

Virginia had a dramatic advantage in opportunities in the game – a 29-6 edge in shots, including 11-0 in the two OT periods.

To the men, then, the regulation and OTs played to a 2-2 draw, with Virginia (12-2-5) getting the 80th-minute equalizer on a PK from Nick Simmonds.

The PK round came down to a final try by UVA’s Marco Dos Santos, which was saved by UNCG keeper Seth Wilson to preserve the 4-3 win for the Spartans (12-4-6).
