UVA baseball’s McMullan named MASA Coach of Year

uva-logo-new2UVA associate baseball head coach Kevin McMullan has been named the Mid-Atlantic Scouts Association’s Coach of the Year. McMullan will receive his award on Saturday, Nov. 8, in a ceremony at Ripken Stadium in Aberdeen, Md.

“This is a great honor for Kevin to receive the MASA Coach of the Year Award as he is extremely deserving,” Virginia head coach Brian O’Connor said. “Player development is a very important part of our program and nobody does it better than Kevin. I am happy to see that the professional scouts in our area have recognized the consistent work Kevin has done with our players to prepare them for professional baseball.”

Virginia went 53-16 in 2014 while finishing as the NCAA runner-up. UVa reached the College World Series Finals for the first time in program history while earning the program’s third CWS berth in the last six seasons.

UVa won NCAA regional and super regional championships on its home field before capturing its bracket in the CWS to advance to the finals series. Virginia then dropped a thrilling championship series, two games to one, to Vanderbilt in its bid for the program’s first national title.

“The Mid-Atlantic Scouts Association is looking forward to honoring Kevin McMullan as Coach of the Year,” said Tom Burns, president of the Mid-Atlantic Scouts Association. “The scouts recognize the tremendous contribution which Kevin has made to the success enjoyed by the UVA baseball program.”

McMullan is currently in his 12th season at Virginia and his ninth as associate head coach. McMullan has been instrumental in helping Virginia to 514 wins in the last 11 seasons, an average of over 46 wins per season.

Virginia has led the ACC in batting over the last six years combined. The Cavaliers own a .308 team batting average during that span and led the conference in batting in 2009, 2010 and 2013.

Defensively, the Cavaliers also have shined under McMullan, and UVa owns the highest fielding percentage in the ACC since his arrival in 2004 (.973). The 2014 team set a program record with a .981 fielding percentage, marking the ninth time in McMullan’s tenure the Cavaliers have eclipsed the .970 mark in fielding.

Tickets for the banquet are available for $75 and may be purchased by contacting Tom Burns at 717-805-2802.
