An anonymous UVA Athletics donor – there are a lot of those folks anymore – is pledging a million dollars to UVA Baseball, with the pledge structured as a matching gift, meaning, it will end up being $2 million, when the rest of you get off your keisters and pitch in.
The money will go to increasing the number of scholarships the UVA Baseball program can offer.
The House v. NCAA settlement allows programs to offer up to 34 scholarships now, up from the 11.7 that was the upper limit through the end of the 2025 season.
The Virginia Athletics Foundation website has the value of an in-state scholarship at $39,422, and an out-of-state scholarship at $78,842.
This $2 million gift, when it’s fully realized, would be expected to provide between $80,000 and $100,000 a year toward scholarships for the UVA Baseball program – so, two in-states or one out-of-state.
Not exactly the “transformational commitment” that we were being sold in this morning’s press release announcing the gift, but hey, it’s a step in the right direction.
By my analysis, we don’t need 34 fully funded scholarships – Power 4 programs tend to use 25-28 players in any given season.
Meaning: still work to do.
