Music
Music lessons are available through EMU’s Preparatory Music Program for students of all levels, ages 3 and up. Lessons are offered for violin, viola, cello, double bass, guitar, flute and piano with Suzuki options for most instruments. Register now for the fall semester beginning August 25! EMU Music Faculty Artist Series: Musica Harmonia on Saturday, January 10, at 7:30 p.m., in EMU’s Martin Chapel in the Seminary building. Chamber music by composers Mark O’Connor, Antonin Dvorak and Johann Strauss Jr. The performers in Musica Harmonia are Joan Griffing, violin; Diane Phoenix-Neal, viola; and Beth Vanderborgh, cello. Musikgarten at EMU is now registering students for winter classes for babies, toddlers, preschoolers and kindergarten through second grade. Classes are offered at various times throughout the week. The 10-week session begins February 2. Classes will include folk songs, movement, making music with instruments, music games and more in a fun, educational environment. EMU Suter Science Seminar: “Will the Glorious Respect for the Country Doctor Continue into the Future?” with Linford Gehman, PhD, Green Valley Clinic in Bergton, Virginia, on Monday, January 12, at 4 p.m., in EMU’s Science Center room 104. Dr. Gehman will share experiences he had living and working among a community that still values traditions that have stood the test of time: neighbors helping each other, humility, integrity, devotion to family and church. As health care changes with new technology, burgeoning knowledge, multiple new regulations and economics, the overall quality, integrity and compassion of providers that was always highly respected can be upheld. MLK Jr. Day of Service and Learning, Jan. 15-20, at Eastern Mennonite University. EMU Suter Science Seminar: “From Paraguay to Harrisonburg: A Healthcare Adventure,” with Jim Krauss, president of Sentara RMH Medical Center and corporate vice president for Sentara Healthcare on Monday, Jan. 26, at 4 p.m., in EMU’s Science Center room 106. Follow the trail of one person’s career-long healthcare experience from developing health services in San Joaquin, Paraguay as a Peace Corps Volunteer to serving in an executive role in the American healthcare system. Could the book “Where There is No Doctor” be as useful in the United States as it is in the developing world? What does the Affordable Healthcare Act afford for our country? What is broken about our healthcare system? Is there a difference between volume-based care versus value-based care? Is population health the future paradigm to cure our nation?
