Dr. Showalter will use the “KISS” (Keep It Simple, Sir) approach to the physiology and theology of addiction, while showing, with the statistics of addiction, that we are all “Addicts.” He will reference the book “Addiction and Grace” by Dr. Gerald May, which he has found helpful in elucidating both the physiological as well as theological aspects of addiction. Suter Science Seminar with Christine Hughey, PhD, on Friday, Sept. 19, at 4 p.m., in EMU’s Science Center room 106. Dr. Hughey will present on: Electrospray Ionization Liquid Chromatography Mass Spectrometry (ESI LC/MS): Foodomics & Fundamentals. Positive and negative ion electrospray selectively ionizes nonvolatile basic and acidic compounds, respectively, for mass spectrometric detection. Hughey’s undergraduate research group uses this technique in targeted and untargeted profiling of food samples (a.k.a., food metabolomics). They also study the effect of analyte physiochemical properties and solution conditions (solvent, pH) on electrospray response. A better understanding of electrospray ionization fundamentals facilitates method development for our foodomic applications, which includes the profiling of nuts, fruits, chocolate and beer. Admission is free and open to the public. Contact the Science Center at 540-432-4325 for more information.
