Tim Taylor returns to UVA women’s basketball staff as assistant

UVA women’s basketball head coach Joanne Boyle announced on Tuesday (June 14) the hiring of Tim Taylor as an assistant coach.

This hiring marks Taylor’s return as a member of the Virginia coaching staff. Taylor worked on Debbie Ryan’s staff from 2000-05, serving as the recruiting coordinator, returning in 2009 as the associate head coach. In his time at Virginia, Taylor was recognized as one of the top assistant coaches in the country by earning an invite to the prestigious Nike Villa 7 program. During his tenures, the Cavaliers made five NCAA tournament appearances and signed back-to-back top-15 recruiting classes. Taylor also coached Monica Wright during the 2010 season when she was named the ACC Player of the Year and Defensive Player of the Year, while also garnering AP and State Farm All-America honors.

His coaching philosophy aligns perfectly with the direction this program is headed. Tim has an incomparable technical knowledge of the game, which contributes to his ability to develop exceptional student-athletes. In addition to his wealth of experience, Tim values the importance of relationships and brings an infectious positive energy to all that he does. I am thrilled to welcome Tim and his family to our Cavalier program.”

Since 2012, Taylor has been the principal at William Wetsel Middle School in Madison, Va., and served as an assistant coach at United Christian Academy, leading the team to a 45-6 record during his time on the sideline with two state appearances and a regional championship in 2014. In his previous high school coaching tenure, Taylor helped lead Orange County to a school-record 25-straight wins and its first-ever state tournament appearance in 2005-2006. He also led Madison County to a school-record 28-straight wins, District and Regional Championships in 2008-09 and a state tournament Final Four Berth. His overall head coaching record is 134-44.

Taylor, who was born in Charlottesville, received a B.S. in political science and an M.S. in educational Administration from James Madison. He is married to the former Tonya Daughtry, a graduate of the McIntire School of Commerce at UVA. The couple has three children, a daughter Jordan and sons Dalton and Jackson.
