The Staunton Makerspace, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit dedicated to making innovation affordable and accessible to the community, is proud to announce the installation of the Free Community Craft Kiosk.
The kiosk, located at The Staunton Makerspace, will provide donated craft supplies free of charge to anyone in need.
“Creativity shouldn’t be limited by budget. The Craft Kiosk is about more than craft supplies — it’s about empowering people to make, create, and explore, no matter their circumstances. Lack of money shouldn’t mean a lack of opportunity to create,” said Dan Funk, co-founder of The Staunton Makerspace along with Jim Rutt.
The idea is simple: community members who have craft projects they want to pursue but lack the means to purchase materials can stop by the kiosk and pick up what they need. The kiosk is also a resource for children and families who might be looking for creative activities but cannot afford supplies. To help keep the kiosk available for as many neighbors as possible, The Staunton Makerspace kindly encourages visitors to take just what they need for one project at a time so something is always left to spark the next person’s creativity.
The Craft Kiosk itself was designed and built by dedicated Makerspace volunteers Vayla Boutenko and Jim Klawon, whose craftsmanship and generosity brought the project to life. The Craft Kiosk is not only functional but also a work of art in itself with hand-crafted pottery tiles on the roof created by members of the Pottery Guild, donated stained glass windows and beautiful cedar siding. The kiosk is designed to inspire creativity not only through the supplies it offers but also through its beauty and craftsmanship.
“People from all over the United States are catching wind of the Craft Kiosk and loving the idea. They are mailing in their extra craft supplies and ready-made kits, and we now have seven boxes of materials ready to go,” Boutenko said.
The Craft Kiosk will be stocked with a rotating variety of items such as paper, fabric, beads, yarn, markers, glue and other art and craft materials. All items are donated by community members and supporters of The Staunton Makerspace.
The Staunton Makerspace welcomes donations of new craft supplies and ready-made craft kits with instructions to keep the Craft Kiosk stocked or direct financial donations online to support the purchase of supplies and scholarships. The Staunton Makerspace asks residents, artists and friends of the community to consider contributing so that creativity remains accessible to everyone.
Founded on the belief that everyone should have access to tools, skills and resources, The Staunton Makerspace provides workspace, equipment and education for makers of all ages and skill levels. As a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, The Staunton Makerspace’s goal is to make innovation affordable to the community through shared resources, workshops and community-driven initiatives.
The Staunton Makerspace is at 20 S. Jefferson Street, Staunton.
