Vest, Daniel Matthew Jr.The Waynesboro Police Department has charged a Staunton man for a sexual assault that took place in early September at a Waynesboro apartment complex.

Daniel Matthew Vest Jr., 18 years old, faces one felony count of rape for the Labor Day attack of a 54-year-old victim, a Waynesboro woman.  On September 9, the Waynesboro Police Department was notified of the sexual assault that took place at an apartment complex off Hopeman Parkway where the victim lives.

She told police that Vest, whom she had met the previous day, came to her apartment at 9:30 p.m.on September 1 wanting to buy a pack of cigarettes.  When she went to get the cigarettes, Vest followed her and assaulted her in her kitchen.

The victim said she was initially too afraid to report the rape but came forward with the support of friends.  She also told police that she didn’t want Vest to assault anyone else.

Officers from the Staunton Police Department arrest Vest last night.  He is being held without bond at Middle River Regional Jail.
