The Staunton Augusta Art Center announces its fall classes and workshops for adults and high school age students.
A detailed supply list will be made available to all registrants. Registration deadline is one week prior to the start of the class. Please call the Art Center to register: 885-2028. All classes will be on the second floor of the R. R. Smith Center for History and Art, 20 S. New Street, in historic downtown Staunton.
Students are welcome to make use of studio space in classroom #4, for practice between class sessions, at no additional charge.
Creative Collage with Maribeth Nolde
Six Tuesdays, September 11, 18, 25 and October 2, 16, 23

Discover how collage involves constructing a visual art piece from a variety of materials with a goal of expressing yourself through basic skills involving scissors, glue, and a creative mind. Collages can be either realistic or abstract….organized or seemingly chaotic (but balanced)….made from everyday materials or carefully chosen specialty papers, and always fun to put together! The process from the idea to the sketch to the construction to the final product will all be covered in this class. Complete 4 or 5 different collages using vastly different techniques based on information and art examples by collage artists, but using your own imagination. Students need to bring a collection of colored papers of all types, a 9X12 drawing pad, pencils, scissors, and Acid Free paste (has less water – but acid free glue is ok) to start. Other items will be requested as the class proceeds.
The Third Dimension in Watercolor with Peg Sheridan

Do your paintings look flat, lifeless, or unconvincing? Learn how to make your paintings look more 3-dimensional. Peg will show you some easy tips for creating realistic shapes, buildings in perspective, and landscapes that have aerial perspective, all through the application of light, color, and drawing skills.
Beginning Acrylic Painting with Peg Sheridan

This one-day workshop will give you a great introduction to acrylic painting. Peg will introduce you to the materials needed and the basic techniques, and then lead you through a step-by-step process for creating a small painting. You will leave the workshop with enough knowledge to begin painting at home!
Basic Drawing with Maribeth Nolde

If you are new to drawing or if you need a refresher in the basics of drawing real objects….this is the class for you! Learn how to deal with basic shapes and forms found in all real objects. You will learn outline drawing, basic styles of shading and shadows, and how to transfer what you have learned to real objects around you. After the basics, the class will draw an actual still life. Maribeth will provide information, guided demonstrations, practice time, and individual attention to each student in the class. Her style of “gentle” assistance will enable anyone to learn how to draw an object that appears realistic on the drawing paper. If you do not know how to draw, you will after you take this class! Students need to bring a drawing pad, graphite drawing pencil, and good eraser.
Handmade, Personalized Books with Maribeth Nolde

Learn to how to make several hand-made books that can be used for gifts, personal scrapbooks, journals, or photo albums. This workshop is perfect timing for very special gift-giving. Basic supplies you will need are acid free glue, scissors, assortment of any colored papers you like, watercolor or acrylic paints/brushes, a black (and other colors if you like) micro point pen, colored pencils and any other basic art supplies you may have.
