The American Shakespeare Center, the Augusta Regional SPCA and the Friends of Staunton Augusta Waynesboro Animal Shelter (Friends of SAWAS) have partnered to bring dog adoption from local shelters to center stage.

Adoptable pups from local shelters are filling the role of “Crab the Dog” in ASC’s production of “The Two Gentlemen of Verona” in downtown Staunton. Audience members can meet the four-legged stars and even adopt them into forever homes thanks to Project Goodfellow.

ASC is also collecting donations at the Blackfriars Playhouse to support local shelters. Essential supplies for dogs and cats may be dropped off during box office hours. In the spirit of generosity, the ASC invites patrons and community members to donate supplies for cats and dogs in need. Contributions will directly support shelter animals by providing food, toys and much-needed supplies.

Founded by the ASC actor Constance Swain in 2018, Project Goodfellow is ASC’s tradition of giving back to the community. Each year, the program adapts to meet local needs — from providing school resources to families, to winter essentials and small toys for children, and now, support for local animal shelters.

The American Shakespeare Center (ASC) lights up the Blackfriars Playhouse in Staunton, the world’s first re-creation of Shakespeare’s indoor theatre. Since 1988, ASC has brought bold performances and imaginative programs to audiences near and far, always under one guiding belief: theatre is a radical act of community. Whether staging Shakespeare’s classics, partnering with local schools or opening our doors to first-time theatregoers, ASC connects the community through story, shared light and unforgettable experiences.
