State Police investigate accident on Afton Mountain

Chris Graham

afton mtnAt 6:03 p.m., Virginia State Police Trooper J.S. Martin was called to the scene of a six-vehicle chain reaction crash on Afton Mountain in Albemarle County. Traffic in the westbound lanes of Interstate 64 had slowed. A westbound Ford F-150 failed to stop in time and sparked the chain reaction crash. Based on the trooper’s investigation, the F-150 pickup truck struck the vehicle in front it, which pushed that vehicle into the one in front of it. Three vehicles behind the F-150 then crashed into one another trying to avoid the other crashed vehicles.

There was only one minor injury sustained in all six vehicles.

The driver of the F-150, Maria Del Carmen, 30, was charged with following too closely and failing to have a valid driver’s license. (State police are still in the process of determining Del Carmen’s place of residence)

All lanes were reopened by 8:10 p.m.
