If anybody was going to break the Undertaker undefeated streak at WrestleMania, it was going to be CM Punk at WrestleMania 29. The cards seemed aligned. Punk was at the top of the game last spring, and ‘Taker seemed about as close to being out the door as he ever was to that point.
It seemed fitting to let Punk, arguably then WWE’s biggest star, coming off a 400-plus-day run as WWE champ, be the man to end The Streak.
‘Taker, though, as he had 20 other times, rallied to win his WM match, and The Streak lived on.
The question now, with Brock Lesnar lined up to be Undertaker’s WrestleMania 30 opponent, is whether Lesnar will be the man to end The Streak, and looking at the bigger picture, should The Streak ever end?
I argue that it shouldn’t end. If you’re not going to use The Streak to elevate an up-and-coming star, like, say, Roman Reigns or Bray Wyatt, then it makes no sense to end it. Lesnar doesn’t need to be the man to have ended The Streak; neither do John Cena, Randy Orton or other established stars.
Better to let ‘Taker take his streak with him into the netherworld. The mystery will always be there if he does: might Undertaker make one last WrestleMania appearance?
