Shenandoah Valley Art Center features summer show judged by Jennifer Vaughan

The Shenandoah Valley Art Center, during the months of June and July, is exhibiting the works of SVAC member artists, in an exhibition judged by Jennifer Vaughan.

Vaughan is the visual arts department coordinator and instructor for the Shenandoah Valley Governor School located in Fishersville since 2002. Vaughan holds a master of arts in education from James Madison University. She has taught in Augusta County for 27 years, at Stuarts Draft High School and the last 13 at Shenandoah Valley Governor’s School.

She considers herself a set realization artist who has continually contributed her expertise to local community theatres, such as ShenArts, Waynesboro Players, Oak Grove, Lime Kiln, and Wayside Theatre.

Her love of photography has dominated the artwork that she has exhibited most recently. The curriculum developed by Vaughan for the Visual Arts Department at SVGS serves gifted junior and senior high school students of the Augusta County, Staunton, and Waynesboro Public Schools.

Under Vaughan’s guiding hand, the visual arts studio classes are distinguished by presenting the study of many styles, topics, and techniques emphasizing skill development, self-expression, and experimentation.

One of the two studio courses is taught by professional artists, giving the students the opportunity to learn about a media’s techniques and gain insight into the life of working artists. Students also have the added experience of field trips for photo shoots, sketching, and museum or gallery visits.

Vaughan will bring her extensive art experience with her to judge the SVAC Members’ Exhibit.

An opening reception and awards ceremony will be held Saturday, June 6, 6:00 – 8:00 p.m. and the public is encouraged to come and meet the artists.

Also this month, the Art Center is hosting on June 20, from 11:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.,its annual Anniversary Party and Fundraiser. Food, lawn games, music and FUN at Ridgeview Park!  Tickets must be purchased by June 10.

Come learn the art of Felted Wool and Silk Spiral Scarfs taught by Karen Shapcott .You will be making a work of art to wear! Shenandoah Valley Art Center offers a Summer Art Camp for Kids. Week one will be Fairy Gardens, July 6 – 10, 9:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. for kids ages 6 – 11, and will focus on creating a fairy house, furnishings, live plants and fairy friends. ($60)  Week two will be Pirate Camp, July 13 – 17, 9:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m., for kids ages 6 – 11, and will feature creating a treasure chest, building a boat, dressing like a pirate and searching for treasure. ($60) Week three is Ceramic Art Camp and will be held at the Lyndhurst ceramic studio of Lynn Hilton Conyers.  The class will meet July 20, 21, 23 and 24, 9:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. or 12:30 – 2:30 p.m.  All materials are provided as part of a handbuilding and wheel throwing clay experience for kids ages 6 to 16. ($100)  Art Camp is perfect for imaginative young artists who love to create art! Contact the art center for specific information and required pre-registration.

The Fall Foliage Festival Art Show application for the show to be held on October 10 and 11 is online and available to professional artists.  Recently the show was voted one of the top three art events in Virginia by “Virginia Living” magazine.

The art center is a retail alliance partner with the Artisan Center of Virginia. In the SVAC Gift Shop you can find the perfect creative gift in fiber, jewelry, wood, glass, pottery, and more by juried artisans from Virginia and SVAC member artists.
