The body of the 12-year-old boy swept away by rushing water Tuesday night in Albemarle County has been recovered.

The body of Jordan Sims was found at approximately 8:45 a.m. this morning.

Search efforts have concluded. The search was paused overnight due to limited visibility and the safety of first responders. The boy was swept away at approximately 5:30 p.m. Tuesday night. Swift-water rescue operations took place for more than three hours before the search was paused. The search resumed at daylight.

The 12-year-old boy was walking outside in the area of Newtown Road and Valley Green Drive in Greenwood when rushing water from a nearby creek overtook the roadway.

The body recovered will be transported to the Medical Examiner’s Office in Richmond for positive identification.

“This is a heartbreaking outcome, and our hearts are with the Sims’ family and loved ones,” said Dan Eggleston, Albemarle County Fire Rescue chief.

The Albemarle County Police Department, Virginia Department of Transportation, Lynchburg Fire Department and the Virginia Department of Wildlife Resources provided assistance in the search operations.

“We are incredibly grateful to our local and regional partners who supported this search effort with urgency, professionalism and care,” Eggleston said.
