Scott County: Tennessee woman ejected, dies in head-on collision on Route 71

A Tennessee woman was ejected and died in an accident on Route 71 in Scott County on Thursday.

Danielle N. Ward, 40, of Kingsport, Tenn., died at the scene, according to Virginia State Police.

The fatal two-vehicle crashed occurred March 20 at 5:20 p.m.

According to police, a Hyundai Accent was traveling northbound on Route 71 (south of Route 791) when it moved into the southbound lanes to try and pass another northbound vehicle.  The vehicle then struck a southbound Chrysler van head on.

Following the collision, the Hyundai then rolled over the guardrail on the left side of the road.

The driver of the Hyundai, Stetson N. Laney, 34, of Kingsport, Tenn., suffered serious injuries.  Laney was wearing a seatbelt. Ward was a passenger in the vehicle. She was not wearing a seatbelt.

The driver of the van, Paul G. Collins, 87, of Bluff City, Tenn., suffered serious injuries, as did a passenger, Ruth Collins, 81.

Laney has been charged with reckless driving.

The crash remains under investigation
