The Richmond Flying Squirrels (15-10) defeated the Bowie Baysox (13-13), 5-3, in front of 7,789 at The Diamond on Thursday night. The win earned the Squirrels the series win, their second of the season over the Baysox.
The Baysox got started quickly against Richmond right-hander Clayton Blackburn with a run in the top of the first inning. Buck Britton led off the ballgame with a double slapped to left field. He moved to third on a bounce out from Niuman Romero and scored easily when Christian Walker singled back through the middle.
Richmond erased the Bowie lead with a two-out rally against Baysox righty Tyler Wilson, a UVa. baseball alum, in the fourth inning. Angel Villalona launched a double to straightaway center field and scored when Mario Lisson followed with a single up the middle.
Bowie wasted no time breaking back on top as Garabez Rosa opened the fifth inning with a double pulled up the left-field line. He moved over to third on a wild pitch and made it 2-1 when K.D. Kang lifted a sacrifice fly to center field.
The Squirrels again answered in the bottom of the frame, plating their second run off of Wilson. Myles Schroder delivered an inning-opening single after a lengthy battle. A wild pitch from Wilson allowed Schroder to move up to second base and he scored to level the ballgame, 2-2, when Ryan Lollis sliced a single into left field.
Richmond grabbed the lead for the first time in the sixth inning, as jarrett parker led off with a triple off of his former college roommate, Wilson. Devin Harris, playing his first game as a Squirrel, followed with a single into left field. Parker scored for a 3-2 Richmond lead. After Wilson recorded the first out of the inning, Lisson and Ricky Oropesa delivered back-to-back singles to knock him out of the game. Oropesa’s single brought home Harris. Right-hander Juan Morillo entered in relief and conceded a single to Schroder. Lisson came in to make it 5-2 Richmond.
Wilson (4-1) was charged with five earned runs on 11 hits over 5 1/3 innings. He was saddled with his first loss of the season, walking none and striking out six.
Blackburn (2-2) earned the win for the Squirrels in his longest outing of the season. He worked seven innings, utilizing four double plays behind him, while conceding a pair of runs on eight hits. He walked two and struck out one.
Bowie capped the scoring for the evening with a run against lefty Bryce Bandilla in the eighth inning. However, right-handers Edwin Quirarte and Derek Law teamed up to finish the ballgame without further incident. Quirarte recorded the final out of the eighth inning, while Law handled the ninth to earn his seventh save of the season.
The Squirrels hit the road to begin a six-game road trip on Friday as they travel to Trenton, NJ. They open a three-game series with the Trenton Thunder (New York Yankees) at ARM & HAMMER Park at 7:05 p.m. Richmond LHP Adalberto Mejia (1-1, 4.50) will make the start against Trenton RHP Graham Stoneburner (0-0, 11.12).
